My experience at The Pilot House was pretty terrible to be honest.

The staff are very, very nice people, and the service was pretty fast. I went at lunch time, and my party was probably the only party there. The waitress we got was kind, but extremely ditzy. She messed up the drink orders, the meal orders, and the check. She even accidentally spilled a drink all over the table, causing some purses and phones to get wet.

The waitress recommended a special called "The Jerkin' Chicken" and she talked about it like it was the best food on the planet. We ordered it, and it was horrible. The presentation of the plate looked like leftovers somebody just plopped on a plate. And the food itself wasn't good at all and it was cold. The chicken tasted odd, the potatoes were cold and tasted bad, and the corn was mushy and cold.

Also, the prices on their menu aren't worth it at all. It was bad, cold food with an ugly presentation and bad atmosphere. Definitely not worth the price we paid at.

Also, the atmosphere isn't anything special. It is dark and a little out-dated. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. There are many other, better places to eat at nearby in Cape May.

Don't order the crab cake - it tastes like it is made with canned crabmeat (the type which is like canned tunafish) and mostly filler despite the menu description indicating "lump" crab. The fried flounder basket is very expensive for the quality - the breading is very salty and not very flavorful otherwise. The fish and chips is miserly in size. The shrimp tacos have shrimp which are chopped in small pieces, then breaded, allowing for cost savings by the restaurant but a less than satisfying experience for the patron. The iced tea is powdered and rehydrated. What restaurant can't make brewed iced tea? The final insult for our visit was that a 20% tip was added to the bill for our party of 8 when the service was only fair.

This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have had. I had a party of 14 people, 11 adults and 3 children. After we ordered our food it took over an hour for the staff to serve it. One of the members of my party ordered a Manhattan clam chowder. He asked the waitress to take it back because it tasted odd. After she took it from him she asked the rest of my party "Does any one want this?"
Then at the end she kept the soup on the check, even though we returned it. It was overpriced, and the food was cold. I ordered a Caesar salad thinking that they can't go wrong with it, but the lettuce was soggy. If you want to enjoy your vacation don't go here.
